Event Report : Kids Motor Show / American Picnic Day 2014

The first edition of the American Picnic Day event in Odaiba, Tokyo drew thousands of curious visitors. Events about custom american cars and motorbikes from the ’60s and ’70s are not mainstream in Japan, but this time the word was well spread thanks to famous George Tokoro, co-organizer of the America Picnic Day.

Taking place on a huge parking lot, between to the Tokyo Motor Festival ’14 and the 1/1 scale Gundam statue, many booths displayed custom american cars or bikes, parts, goods or antiques.

George Tokoto is a big fan of scale models (he works with Tomytec on the Snake Motors line), that’s why he created the first Kids Motor Show, miniature version of the Tokyo Motor Show showcasing all the 2014 products from the main makers: TakaraTomy of course, but also Hot Wheels, Ebbro, Kyosho… All the minicars that were on display at the All Japan Model & Hobby Show last month gathered at the same spot. Pretty neat. The only inconvenient was the reflection on the windows, making pictures of the cars difficult to take.

The main attraction of the Kids Motor Show was the exclusive Tomica VW Beetle from Setagaya Base in four versions. Surprizingly popular items, many visitors didn’t mind waiting in line for more than one hour just to get one.
